The PlayStation 6 release date is sooner than anticipated, according to official documents

The PlayStation 6 seems to be closer than we previously thought, making the PlayStation 5 seem outdated. Documents reveal that Sony's next-generation console is on the horizon. Progress seems unstoppable, even if our wallets would prefer a break.

Looking back at previous PlayStation releases: PlayStation consoles typically debut every five to seven years. There was a gap of just over five years between the release of the PS2 and the original PlayStation. Six and a half years separated the launches of the PS3 and PS4, while seven years passed between the PS4 and PS5 releases.

If we were to assume a seven to eight-year interval between platforms, the PlayStation 6 would ideally debut in 2028.

However, official court documents released during the Activision Blizzard dispute involving Sony and Microsoft suggest a different timeline. These documents, slated for a 2027 release, provide insights into Sony's plans. On page 8, it states that Microsoft agreed to keep Activision's games available on PlayStation only until 2027. The document further explains, "By the time SIE launches its next-generation PlayStation console (expected around [redacted]), it could lose access to Call of Duty and other Activision titles, posing a significant risk to its market position."
