Emerging science suggests that our dietary choices profoundly influence various aspects of our health. Our gut health not only interacts with the food we consume but also plays a role in the functioning of our brain and other bodily systems.

In a conversation with CBS News, Dr. Uma Naidoo, a nutritional psychiatrist and the author of "This Is Your Brain on Food," emphasized the vital nutrients necessary for both physical and mental well-being.

Fiber, abundant in fruits, vegetables, berries, and vibrant salads, is also found in extra-dark natural chocolate, rich in serotonin and other nutrients. Dr. Naidoo highlighted its fermented nature and mentioned studies exploring chocolate's potential effects on depression.

Research involving over 13,000 participants found depression rates reduced by over 70%. Consequently, maintaining gut health is crucial not only for physical wellness but also for aspects like mental health. Dr. Naidoo advocates for the Mediterranean diet, complemented with lean proteins and healthy fats, and emphasizes its focus on whole grains, fresh produce, fish, legumes, and nuts. This diet, inspired by regional foods, has been associated with numerous health benefits, including reduced heart disease risk and fewer Alzheimer's disease indicators.

While championing its benefits for digestive health, Naidoo also encourages integrating flavors from various cuisines, coining it the "Mediter-Asian" diet. These diverse meals not only cater to the palate but also offer significant health advantages. "It's an approach to incorporate Mediterranean diet elements in familiar dishes, making them more appealing," she remarked.

The ultimate aim? To reduce inflammation, which Dr. Naidoo identifies as the underlying cause of many health problems, both physical and psychological. She stresses the importance of avoiding sugary chocolate candy bars and acquiring a taste for pure, extra-dark chocolate. "It's a favorite for many," she noted.
